Small habits can quietly shorten the life of your clothes. Here are five mistakes to stop making today.
1. Overloading the Machine
Stuffing the drum full means clothes can't tumble freely, detergent can't circulate, and stains stay put. As a rough guide, leave a hand's width of space at the top of the drum. Your laundry comes out cleaner and your machine lasts longer.
2. Using Too Much Detergent
More soap doesn't mean cleaner clothes — in fact, excess detergent leaves a residue that traps dirt and makes fabrics feel stiff. Follow the dose on the pack, and use less for small or lightly soiled loads.
3. Ignoring the Care Labels
Those little symbols exist for a reason. A crossed triangle means no bleach; a circle means dry clean only. Taking ten seconds to check the tag can save a favourite jumper from shrinking to child-size.
4. Washing Everything on Hot
Hot water sets some stains (like blood and sweat) and shrinks natural fibres. Cold water is fine for most everyday washes, preserves colours, and uses less energy. Reserve hot washes for bedding and towels that need sanitising.
5. Leaving Wet Clothes Sitting
A damp load left in the machine for hours develops that musty smell we all recognise — mildew. Transfer to the dryer or line as soon as the cycle ends. If you've run out of time, our Wash & Fold service handles the whole process for you, folded and fresh.
