How to Remove Stubborn Stains from Your Favorite Clothes

Coffee, ink, oil, and wine don't have to ruin your wardrobe. Here's a practical guide to lifting common stains before they set.

Act Fast, But Don't Panic

The single most important rule of stain removal is speed. The longer a stain sits, the deeper it bonds with the fabric fibres. As soon as a spill happens, gently blot — never rub — with a clean cloth or paper towel to lift the excess. Rubbing pushes the stain further in and can damage delicate weaves.

Know Your Stain, Know Your Treatment

Different stains need different chemistry. Oil-based stains (butter, salad dressing, makeup) respond best to dish soap or a grease-cutting detergent. Protein stains (blood, dairy, egg) should be rinsed with cold water — hot water can cook them into the fabric. Tannin stains (coffee, tea, wine) lift well with a mix of white vinegar and water.

Always Test on a Hidden Area

Before applying any treatment to the front of a garment, test it on an inside seam or hem. Some fabrics and dyes react badly to vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, or rubbing alcohol. A quick patch test prevents turning a small stain into a bleached patch.

When to Call the Professionals

Silk, suede, leather, and structured garments (suits, blazers with interfacing) are best left to a professional cleaner. Home treatments on these fabrics often cause shrinkage, colour loss, or permanent distortion. At Exclusive Laundry, our stain specialists assess each mark and use solvent-based methods that are safe for delicate pieces.

A Quick Stain Cheat Sheet

Coffee: cold water then mild detergent. Red wine: blot, salt the area, then white vinegar. Ink: place fabric stain-down on paper towel and dab with rubbing alcohol. Grease: dish soap, work in gently, rinse warm. Blood: cold water only — never hot. When in doubt, bring it to us within 24 hours for the best chance of full removal.
