Caring for Delicate Fabrics: Silk, Wool, and Lace

Luxury fabrics need a gentler touch. Learn how to keep your delicate pieces looking new for years.

Silk: Cool, Gentle, and Quick

Silk is strong but sensitive to heat and friction. Hand wash in cool water with a silk-friendly detergent, or use the delicate cycle. Never wring — roll in a towel to absorb water, then dry flat away from sunlight. For structured silk pieces, dry cleaning is safest.

Wool: Mind the Heat and the Agitation

Wool shrinks and felts when exposed to heat and movement. Wash cold on a wool cycle with a wool detergent, or hand wash gently. Dry flat on a towel to keep the shape — hanging stretches wool out of form. Moths love wool, so store it clean in breathable bags.

Lace and Embroidery: Handle with Care

Lace and embroidered pieces snag easily. Place them in a mesh laundry bag before any wash, use the delicate cycle, and skip the spin. Lay flat to dry and reshape while damp. Vintage lace is best dry cleaned to preserve the fibres.

Storage Matters as Much as Washing

Fold delicate knits instead of hanging to avoid stretching, use padded hangers for silk blouses, and keep everything in a cool, dry place. Cedar blocks and lavender sachets are natural moth deterrents that won't damage delicate fibres.
