Understanding Laundry Care Symbols: A Complete Guide

Those tiny symbols on clothing tags aren't decoration. Here's what they actually mean.

The Washtub: Wash Temperature and Cycle

A washtub with a number tells you the maximum temperature in Celsius. A line under the tub means a reduced or permanent-press cycle; two lines mean the gentle/delicate cycle. A hand in the tub means hand wash only. A crossed-out tub means do not wash with water — dry clean instead.

The Triangle: Bleach

A plain triangle allows any bleach. Two diagonal lines mean oxygen bleach only (no chlorine). A crossed triangle means no bleach at all. Chlorine bleach weakens fibres and can yellow whites over time, so use it sparingly.

The Square: Drying

A square with a circle is tumble dry — dots inside show heat level (one dot low, two medium, three high). A crossed square means do not tumble dry. Lines inside the square suggest flat or line drying. A curved line at the top means hang to dry.

The Iron: Temperature Settings

Dots inside the iron show the temperature: one dot is low (silk, synthetics), two is medium (wool), three is high (cotton, linen). A crossed iron means don't iron. Steam lines crossed out mean use a dry iron only.

The Circle: Dry Cleaning

A plain circle means dry clean. Letters inside (P, F) indicate which solvent the cleaner should use. A crossed circle means do not dry clean. If you see this symbol, bring the garment to us and we'll match the right process.
